The Benefits of Using Wheel Spacers on Ford Explorer

Choosing Bolt Pattern & Thickness
You need to determine the right spacer width in order to space out your wheels appropriately. This can often be a challenging task. You can measure the length between the inner fender lip and the outer most portion of your tires to determine how much space you’ll need if spacing out your existing tires. Tires deflect under load. It is, therefore, vital that you leave sufficient space between the tire and the fender lip. If you’re purchasing spacers for new wheels, compare the width and offset of the new wheels to that of the existing wheels.
Where the new set of wheels are similar in size but offset 10mm further inboard than your old tires, run a spacer of the same width (10mm) to counteract the distance and regain your vehicle’s look. If the wheels purchased are broader than your old wheels, take into consideration the additional distance when determining the required size of spacer. For better results, fit your new wheels and take measurements. Take note of your bolt pattern as well. Spacers come with different bold patterns. Installing Wheel Spacers on Ford Explorer
- Wheel spacers are exclusively designed for each type of vehicle. Make sure that you have the right wheel adapters/spacers before installing. - Park your vehicle on level ground. Use the breaker bar or tire iron to loosen all the lug nuts that secure your wheels to the hub. Do not remove them.
- Position an automotive jack at an appropriate point under your vehicle. Raise the truck high enough to lift the tire off the ground. Use a jack stand to support your vehicle. Avoid working on your tires while your vehicle is supported solely by the automotive jack. It can quickly tip or fall causing severe injury or death.
- Remove all the loosened lug nuts from the tire that you’re working on. Get your wheel off the hub and put it aside. Use a wire brush to clean up the hub if it’s dirty, pitted or rusty. Make sure the surface is smooth and clean. Apply some degreaser on the lug studs. Use a rag to wipe them down.
- If you wish to affix your spacer/adapter using Loctite, place a drop on each stud. Place your adapter/spacer onto the hub. Make sure that the wheel studs align with the holes in the spacer. This allows the spacer to sit firm. Use the bolts to fix your spacer to the hub and tighten them to the specified torque with a torque wrench. If the hubs turn, have someone press the brake gently to prevent this.
- Slide your wheel onto the studs and allow it to sit firmly. Tighten it using the original lug nuts in a star pattern. Use the automotive jack to raise the vehicle. Remove the jack stand and lower the truck completely.
- Repeat the last four steps above for the remaining wheels.
- Use a properly calibrated torque wrench to confirm that all the lug nuts are screwed up to 10% less torque than what is specified by the manufacturer. Tightening to completion can sometimes weaken, break or damage the spacer studs. Carry out regular routine checks to ensure that they are tightened to spec.
