Choosing Bolt Pattern & Thickness

If the vehicle uses lug nuts

A car with wheel nuts has its studs projecting from the hub. Start by placing one washer at a time on each stud. All studs should have an equal number of washers. Test the wheel as you check your wheel-caliper clearance. Restrict from rotating the wheel as this might damage the new parts. If the clearance isn’t enough, keep adding washers until you’re satisfied.

Clearance issues might arise at the break. Determining the right amount of thickness needed to clear the caliper can be hard. According to professionals, 1-3 mm should be enough. Test out the clearance with a piece of paper, and if it clears, you’re good to go. The clearance doesn’t change even when the wheel is fixed correctly.

As you take care of the caliper clearance, be careful not to push the wheel too close to the fender. There needs to be enough clearance on both ends.

Once satisfied with the number of washers added, remove the wheel and the washers occupying one of the studs. Measure the washer thickness. This is the size of spacer that you’ll need. Do not measure the thickness if you have not attained an equal number of washers on all studs.

If the vehicle uses lug bolts

Lug bolts usually tighten into threaded holes found in the hub. The process here is a bit clumsy but achievable. Ensure that all the wheel bolts get through the wheel. Add a washer to each bolt from the back side of the wheel.

To prevent the washers from sliding or falling off, position the wheel vertically. Keep adding and removing washers until you achieve the desired fitment. Measure the washer thickness on any one of the wheel bolts.

Installing Wheel Spacers on Jeep Liberty

Park your vehicle on level ground. Loosen all the lug nuts from one of the wheels. Use a floor jack to lift the car and support it on a jack stand. This process should be repeated on all four corners until the vehicle is adequately supported.

Remove all the lug nuts. Uninstall the wheels and set them aside. Degrease and wipe the lug nuts. Use a wire brush where there’s too much dirt. Wipe the hub surface as well.

If your wheel spacer is not the bolt-on type, slide it onto the studs. Let it sit firmly against your hub. Where the vehicle uses lug bolts, let your spacer align with the holes on the hub.

If your spacer is the bolt-on type, place it onto the studs. Bolt it to the hub using lug nuts. If it did not come with bolts, get them at your local auto parts store. Tighten the nuts to around 90 ft-lbs.

Install the wheel onto the studs. Tighten the lug nuts/bolts using a lug wrench. Do this for all wheels.

Lift the car using a floor jack, then remove the jack stand. Lower the vehicle, each corner at a time. Tighten all the lug nuts with a torque wrench in a crisscross pattern. Torque them to around 70 to 90 ft-lbs which should be the manufacturer’s specified setting. Check the lug nut tightness after every 100 miles of driving.
