Overview

The redesigned Toyota Tundra pickup for 2022 is an evolution of the previous model, rather than a revolution. It doesn’t change the status quo of big pickups, but it also doesn’t follow the domestic pickup truck blueprint exactly. For one thing, it’s the only full-size pickup in the half-ton segment without an optional V-8 engine.

The base engine is a twin-turbocharged V-6, which produces 348 or 379 horsepower for different models. The more powerful hybridized variant produces 437 horsepower with 583 pound-feet of torque. Every Tundra uses a 10-speed automatic transmission that can be either rear-wheel drive or four -wheel drive; however, there is no available automatic four -wheel drive system like there are on domestic pickups .

Depending on cab size and trim, the Tundra comes as either an extended- or crew-cab with a 5.5-, 6.5-, or 8.1-ft bed . Its seven tiers of equipment cover the needs of worksite, business, off-road , and suburbia—where a dressy interior is required . Made in Texas, this truck has an optional infotainment screen that longhorn lovers will love because it measures 14 inches wide.

The 2022 redesign features a coil-spring rear suspension for a smoother ride; by comparison, other trucks with leaf springs have a rougher ride. Although it has an impressive 12,000-pound towing capacity, this is lower than what the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and Ford F-150 can tow.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The V-8 engine is no longer offered on the 2022 full-size Tundra pickup truck. Instead, it now comes with a twin-turbocharged V-6 and only a 10-speed automatic transmission. This engine has three different power levels: SR trim at 348 horsepower, 405 pound feet of torque; base SR nonhybridengine at348 horsepower; and base SR trim hybrid engine at 429 horsepower.

The nonhybrid truck makes 389 horses and 479 pound-feet, and our Limited test truck went from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds at our track. The hybrid version has an electric motor integrated into the transmission for pure electric driving at low speeds, which bumps the combined horsepower up to 437 and torque to 583 pound-feet. This also shaves a few tenths off the 0-60 time, running it in just 5.7 seconds flat. In addition, the rear suspension has been updated from a leaf spring design .

Toyota has updated the Tundra’s suspension to coil springs, which enhances the ride and handling. The TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport packages are still available for those who desire them. These include an off-road suspension, skid plates, unique wheels (TRD Off-Road) or 20 inch wheels (TRD Sport), lowered suspension respectively. For those seeking pinnacle off-roading capabilities in their vehicle will want the lifted suspension and exclusive dampers of the TRD Pro–as well as a special set of black 18 inch all terrain tires mounted on its wheels.

Towing and Payload Capacity

Although the Tundra is not as powerful as other full-size trucks when it comes to towing, it can still tow up to 12,000 pounds with an appropriate towing package. The maximum payload capacity for the TUNDRA is 1940 pounds, which is lower than Ford’s 3250 pound max payload capacity but comparable with GMC and Chevrolet.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The nonhybrid powertrain Tundra is rated to receive up to 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on highways; four-wheel drive reduces those figures by 1 mpg each. The hybrid model is also supposed to be able to reach 20 mph in the city and highway driving. However, we’ve found that on our 75-mph highway route test (which is part of our larger testing process), the hybrid only gave us 19mpg. Is the new Toyota Tundra worth buying?

The 2022 Tundra should hit a sweet spot for most buyers, with a good range of standard and available features across the lineup, especially in the middle trims favored by most buyers. The Tundra also has plenty of towing and payload capability to meet the needs of most buyers.

What can I expect from a 2023 Tundra?

For 2023, the Tundra’s changes are predictably light. So far, it’s limited to a new SX package for the SR5 trim. The SX package gives the Tundra a stealthy look, with dark gray wheels and body-colored door handles and rear bumper. Given that, we think the Tundra is an agreeable choice for a light-duty pickup.

Which is better Ram 1500 or Tundra?

But you’ll notice from the comparison is that the Tundra actually offers more power when compared head to head: i-FORCE 3.5L (Tundra) VS 3.6L (Ram): 389 HP vs 305 HP respectively. Tundra offers 84 more horsepower. i-FORCE 3.5L Hybrid (Tundra) VS 5.7L (Ram): 437 HP vs 395 HP respectively.
